the first four months of 1889 Vincent was hospitalized several times in Arles.
At last the citizens of Arles petitioned the authorities to lock him up on the
grounds that he was a "public menace". There is no doubt that Vincent
sufefred genuine fits of paranoia and impenetrable depression. On 8 May he committed
himself freely to the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole. At first Vincent's doctor
confined his freedom of movement to the walled garden of the asylum, but in
the middle of June he was well enough to venture beyond the garden to the immediate
vicinity of the asylum. Vincent was to stay in the asylum for about one year
