Not one of the seven pocket-size sketchbooks has remained intact. Only four still have their original covers. Of the three others, merely a few pages remain. Most of the loose sheets are in the collection of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Some of them inserted cassually, and in an arbitrary order in the books, others placed in passe-partouts and thus treated and inventoried as self-standing drawings. A small number have turned up in other collections, other pages have disappeared. It has, however, been possible for Johannes van der Wolk to reconstruct the books.
This diagram shows how a folding into one signature can take place.
